kenbi mago didgeridoo
Maker: unknown Comments:

This is a vintage mago from the 1980s that shows good signs of usage and is an instrument that was made for local community use rather than for the art market. It is a Wangga-type instrument endemic to the north-west region of the Northern Territory.

The mago has strong, well-defined acoustics and is an outstanding player with fine characteristics to its voice. Peter Atjpurrki demonstrates Wangga didgeridoo accompaniment in the YouTube clip, the first countryman to breath life back into this stick for a long while... check it out!

The instrument has been decorated in earth pigments and displays a rustic charm all of its own. Note: the audio clip is different to the YouTube clip.

burrngupurrngu yirdaki yidaki didgeridoo
Maker: Bruce Burrngupurrngu burrngupurrngu portraitComments:

Another superlative yidaki made by the Yirritja grandmaster, Bruce Burrngupurrngu, the source of inspiration for many expert yidaki players today in eastern Arnhem Land. Bruce's wife, Djul'djul, painted this yidaki with the sacred Dhalwangu Minhala (Long-Neck Tortoise) design, rendered in ochre throughout.

At only 1.3 kg, this is a light instrument with thin walls and really good resonance. The manner of construction is superb and could not be any better. A stunning stick with very good back pressure, excellent light acoustics somewhat reminiscent of older-style yidaki. A top-shelf yidaki of museum-quality.

don weluk mago didgeridoo
Maker: Don Weluk don weluk portraitComments:

This is an attractive, powerful mago made and painted by Don Weluk.

The first thing you will notice about this instrument is its exaggerated conical shape... its just huge! You'll also notice the rustic construction, such as the angular adze marks around the mouthpiece area and the absence of any sanding or polishing of the wood. The whole of the instrument is ochre-decorated and shows the totems of Weluk's mother country at Gattji.

Acoustics are excellent with lots of texture and density typical of the best mago instruments.

Maker: Dhugurun Gulungurr djapilawuy portraitComments:

A fine mago with nice 'throaty' acoustics and good back pressure aided by a shapely conical bore. The mouthpiece would appeal to those who prefer natural as opposed to waxed. At 29-31 mm natural, it is an ideal size and shape, quite small and rather uncommon for mago.

The body of this mago is decorated in perfect rarrk (cross-hatching) patterning that is fine and unblemished. Figurative designs of totemic creatures (not sure what they are) appear in 3 panels.

This is a lively mago with good responsiveness. Tongued glides, a core component of Gunborrk and Bungalinybungaliny styles of play, are easily effected and produced clear sharp 'dith' attacks.

dhugurun mago didgeridoo
Maker: Dhugurun Gulungurr dhugurun portraitComments:

A beautiful mago with very fine artwork of bush yams. Acoustics are balanced with good depth. Excellent response to Gunborrk style.

Dhugurun is one of the leading craftsmen keeping the mago tradition alive. He is an emerging craftsman and artist with a growing reputation for fine instruments. The selection of mago instruments offered here in the iDIDJ Store represent hand-picked stock produced over the last 13 months. Most of these instruments are made from Eucalyptus phoenicea or Scarlet Gum, a particularly resonant timber perfectly suited to mago instruments.

ambrose cameron yidaki didgeridoo
Maker: Ambrose Cameron ambrose portraitComments:

This is an Ambrose Cameron mago that has had some use in Arnhem Land and was previously in the iDIDJ Reference Collection. Offered here for the first time, it would suit a discerning collector/player who is able to look after this mago and who does not mind a bit of wear and tear that used instruments inevitably acquire.

Like all of this Rembarrnga man's instruments, this one is decorated in ochre with Ambrose's signature hand prints.

This mago on offer was made in 2004, and is accompanied by original paper swing tag with catalogue no.940-04.

old port keats marluk mago didgeridoo
Maker: unknown Comments:

The iDIDJ Store is the only place where you can purchase old museum-quality didgeridoos that come with thoroughly researched history and provenance. We will be offering many old instruments in coming days, but here's the first of the lot, a pretty marluk from Port Keats of 1960s-1970s vintage.

This instrument is decorated entirely in ochre earth pigments with a unique squiggly line design at the bell end.

Plays a treat too with good back pressure and a certain liveliness that you would not expect from an old didgeridoo such as this.

banyawarra mago didgeridoo
Maker: Daphne Banyawarra banyawarra portraitComments:

This is an exquisite mago made and painted by Banyawarra. A translator for the award-winning feature film Ten Canoes, Banyawarra was the 2nd artist-in-residence at iDIDJ Australia and her instruments are exclusive to us.

This is an all-round phenomenal instrument with thin walls, excellent resonance, and awesome power. Previous artist-in-residence Darryl Digarrnga loved this mago so much he could hardly stop playing it. Black duct tape has been applied by Darryl to the first half of this instrument to seal minor air leaks. It was envisaged that this mago would accompany Darryl on future international tours with the legendary White Cockatoo group... but here it is in the iDIDJ Store as a special promotional offer. Note the particularly fine ochre line work.
