Rripangu Yirdaki Melbourne Tour, November 2005

Djalu Gurruwiwi was described as "Arnhem Land's latest international cult figure" by the Weekend Australian newspaper in 2002.

The Melbourne public will get the opportunity to experience the magic of this musical-cultural phenomenon in November 2005!

With his Rripangu Yirdaki performance group, Djalu will be in Melbourne, Australia, to share his culture, spirit, wisdom and teachings...

Rripangu Yirdaki has extensive touring and performance history and is one of a very few Australian Aboriginal performance groups offering authentic traditional song and dance. Djalu has been to Japan, the USA, Europe, Taiwan and the Middle East to showcase his unique Galpu culture.

Djalu and his family are seeking to perform at local community events, universities and schools, corporate functions, museums, cultural centres, and music venues.

In Melbourne, Rripangu Yirdaki will consist of:

  • Djalu Gurruwiwi - supreme yidaki player (yidakimirr) and maker, senior lawman, artist, dancer
  • Alfred Gurritjiri - brother of Djalu; lead singer, senior lawman
  • Jennifer Dopiya Yunupingu - wife of Djalu; dancer, talented painter, weaver
  • Valerie Milminyina Dhamarrandji - sister of Djalu, talented artist
  • Susan Gunariny Gurruwiwi - sister of Djalu, talented artist
  • Jason Guwanbal Gurruwiwi - son of Djalu; singer (manikaymirr)
  • Adrian Nyinanyina Gurruwiwi - grandson of Djalu; dancer
  • Zelda Balpiyangay Gurruwiwi - daughter of Djalu; dancer and talented painter

A series of Masterclass yidaki (didgeridoo) playing and making workshops are planned, in addition to mesmerising performances of traditional Yolngu song and dance.

12th November - Public event
What: Masterclass yidaki workshops & Women's workshop (weaving etc.)
Where: Montsalvat, 7 Hillcrest Avenue, Eltham, Victoria 3095
When: 2pm-5pm
Cost: $80 for yidaki playing workshop. $600 for yidaki making workshop (2 places available), participant keep the instrument they make. $80 women's workshop.

Comments: Montsalvat consists of a series of historic buildings set on 12 acres of beautiful parkland. It has a long and proud history of supporting the performing and visual arts. Students may bring their own didgeridoo or borrow one made by Djalu. Djalu's instructional CDs and authentic Djalu yidaki available for sale

13th November - Public event
What: Masterclass yidaki workshops & Women's workshop (weaving etc.) & traditional bunggul concert
Where:
Montsalvat, 7 Hillcrest Avenue, Eltham, Victoria 3095
When: 2pm-5pm for workshops, 6.00pm-7.30pm for traditional bunggul concert
Cost: $80 for yidaki playing workshop ($60 for those who attended the 1st day). $600 for yidaki making workshop (2 places available), participants keep the instrument they make. $80 women's workshop. Concert ticket price is $25/$10 concession (children under 16, students with concession card, unemployed, senior citizens etc.)

Comments: Heaps of activities, workshops, stalls, food, competitions and music! A family-oriented festival not to be missed, located on a significant Aboriginal site traditionally used as a place for trade and ceremonies. The Bogong Moth provided sustainance for the many groups that gathered here. Rripangu Yirdaki will be offering workshops in didgeridoo playing and making, as well as performing traditional dance and song.
