December 2003

December is Gunmul
or Ba:rra'mirri, the wet season
in the Yolngu language. Heavy rain falls almost every day,
caused by the north-west monsoonal winds, Ba:rra'. Dry waterholes
fill quickly, the bush becomes green and lush, and yams send
out their new shoots. Waterbirds such as magpie geese, gurrumattji,
begin to build their nest for egg laying. Mosquitoes breed
and are abundant in the mangroves and inland. Long-neck turtles,
nyangura, come out of aestivation.
