August is Rarranhdharr in the Yolngu language, the hot dry season. It is also the time of Garma, an Indigenous cultural festival that has been running since 1999. Garma is the brainchild of Mandawuy Yunupingu, distinguished Australian and lead singer for the Yothu Yindi band.

6th Garma Festival of Traditional Culture: Indigenous Livelihoods & Leadership. Heaps of activities and events including the yidaki masterclass led by Djalu Gurruwiwi. Gulkula, Gove Peninsula, north-east Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. Attendance fee is AUD$1980 for 4 days. Until 9th August, 2004. www.garma.telstra.com
