darryl digarrnga mago didgeridoo
Maker: Bunggathuwa Dhurrkay Comments:

Quick notes... Bunggathuwa is the youngest brother of Saltwater Band's Manuel Dhurrkay. In his mid-20s, Bunggathuwa only occasionally makes yidaki...

Those who have been paying attention will notice we've dropped the price on this stick by AUD$100 from yesterday. Not that we think this yidaki is not as good as we'd imagined initially. It really is kick-arse, but in the spirit of Christmas if the new price makes it more affordable to someone out there who really wants it, then we're happy :-)

gawurn wuyimbarl didgeridoo
Maker: Francis Gawurn gawurn portraitComments:

This is the first wuyimbal didgeridoo to make it into the iDIDJ Store, and boy, talk about making a bold entry! This stick has class written all over it, from the superb construction right down to the appealing remnant adze marks, to the stunningly simple ochre artwork depicting djiwul or water weeds from Gawurn's mother's country at Gattji. It is said in Wulaki mythology that the Diver Duck's language changed when its bill was ensnared in djiwul.

Read the accompanying YouTube notes to find out more about this remarkable instrument, one of only a few wuyimbal that I've felt worthy of promotion.

darryl digarrnga dikarrna brown mago didgeridoo
Maker: Micky Yalbarr darryl digarrnga portraitComments:

This is a very rustic mago from Warruwi, Goulburn Island, made by ceremonial mago player Micky Yalbarr.

The crafting of this mago was done entirely by hand as evidenced by lovely adze marks throughout.

The conical bore and the voluminous bell end combine to give spot-on back pressure. This is the best mago from Goulburn Island that we have had the pleasure to play, on account of its superb acoustics, gently flared shape, and charming artwork.

dhugurun mago didgeridoo
Maker: Dhugurun Gulungurr dhugurun portraitComments:

A resonant, light, powerful, responsive mago made by Dhugurun, one of Darryl Digarrnga's favourites that plays in the key of G. Described by Darryl as an instrument suited to the late Djoli Laiwanga's voice, as well as for 'rock-n-roll' style.

Excellent transmission of vocal hums and calls. Wonderful back pressure. Beautiful designs of bush yams, very rustic. The shape is lovely with a pronounced flare, giving great amplification without losing acoustic balance and depth.

A beaut little stick with lots of punch, great for Gunborrk style.

This is a special mago with vibrant, energetic acoustics coupled with spectacular artwork. The back pressure is notable and provides ease of play. Responsiveness is excellent, with the slighest breath producing a big sound. The voice is best described as sharp, clear and with plenty of 'snap' to it. 'Dith' tongued attacks produce a beautiful strong pulse when done correctly.

A unique, acoustically superb and visually captivating mago, this is a one-of-a-kind instrument but now that we've found the talent, we're keen to nurture and promote it.

Another great mago with lovely internal configuration... open and voluminous at the bell end, and narrower and tighter in the throat section and mouthpiece end. The result is good acoustic depth and bass response, coupled with just the right amount of back pressure.

The waterlily design adorning the body of this mago is eye-catching and visually striking. The artwork has been sealed to protect it from flaking, fading, or coming off on your hands.

To get to know this mago better, listen to and watch mago maestro Raymond Marpin do his stuff!

Quality mago in the key of D are few and far apart. Certainly there is evidence of Ds in field recordings of yesteryears, but to come across one in the flesh with all the qualities expected of great instruments is not an every day occurrence. So we're particularly pleased to present this mago in the iDIDJ Store, and even more so to have Raymond Marpin show us how it is done on YouTube!

This mago has a lovely termite-eaten configuration, natural throughout. The artwork was painted by a brother of Dhugurun depicting fish, waterlilies and file snakes... the rarrk (cross-hatching) is especially delicate and fine.

This is a fine mago made and painted by Dhugurun. Its acoustics are oriented towards the bass frequencies, but it is surprisingly fast and capable of responding to sudden changes in air pressure and subtle tongue movements. The sound chamber is gradually tapered giving nice back pressure, good power and a wonderful recoil effect when the tongue relaxes to the back of the oral cavity. Vocal transmissions come through nice and strong.

The artwork is amazing and among Dhugurun's finest.
