October is Rarranhdharr, the late dry season in the Yolngu language. The days are hot, the ground scorching, the grass is dry and waterholes have dried up. In the seas turtles are in prime condition and are hunted eagerly, especially for their delicate green fat. The last patches of dry grass are burned to hunt for goannas and wallabies. Magpie geese - gurrumattji - gather in the shrinking waters of wetlands and are easy prey. Initiation ceremonies for young boys and cult rituals are carried out.
